Would you believe us if we said you could burn calories by eating food!? You don't have to be crazy to think it is true. This week, we want to share with you more about everyone's favorite gym term - PROTEIN!!
Protein is the building block of our body. Protein breaks down into smaller units called amino acids. Our body uses amino acids to build new muscles, bones, and connective tissues. Amino acids produce enzymes, neurotransmitters, and even hormones! Amino acids (protein) are vital to our body systems.
What You Need To Know About Protein
Burn Burn Burn
Protein is thermogenic, which means it requires energy to absorb through our intestines. Eating a steak will burn calories when it is properly absorbed!
This doesn't mean that you'll lose 5lb this week because you eat chicken breast with every meal. However, it is good to know that your body is working to pull in the good stuff!
Pass On Seconds
Protein will keep you feeling fuller longer! When we eat a meal, the carbs, and fats move out of the stomach first, while the protein hangs out a bit longer.
Eating protein sources with all your meals will help you remain satiated longer.
Protein Shakes Baby
How much protein do you really need in a day? The answer depends on a handful of factors (workout load, performance desire, weight management goal, etc.). Here is an easy formula to determine if you are eating enough protein.
The International Society of Sports Nutrition recommends:
1.4 - 2.0g of protein for every KG of body weight
If you weigh 150lb you should have 95 - 136g of protein a day.
Convert your body weight to kilograms (your weight / 2.205 = your weight in KG)
Multiply your weight in KG by the recommendations above
You don't need to chug protein shakes all day. However, it is crucial to understand where you stand with your daily protein intake.
